Costa da Morte

The numerous shipwrecks of boats that have occurred along the centuries on these coasts give reasons for that name.

Newspaper libraries report that already in 1596, 25 ships of the Spanish Navy sank after a terrible storm causing 1706 victims.

History continued to give us unpleasant news such as the catastrophes caused by the English ships “RMS Solway” (1843), “Wolfstrong” (1870), “Irish Hull” (1883), “SS Tunstall” (1885) and “HMS Serpent” (1890) among many others.

In the last decades other ships had the same misfortune. Examples are the “Banora” (1965), “Casón” (1987) and the most recent, the “Prestige” (2002).

To these catastrophes suffered by ships from other latitudes must be added those suffered by the local fleet. Fishing fed many families and, in their daily search for sustenance, many lost some of their members as they entered the harsh Atlantic waters. The shipwrecks suffered by ships such as “David” (1899), “Os Tonechos” (1991), “Sin Querer Dos” (2018) or “O Silvosa” (2018), among others, remind us from time to time of the harshness of the work at sea and the meteorological conditions that plague these coasts.

But the Costa da Morte is not only death and destruction, as its name might indicate. The Costa da Morte is life, dreamy landscapes, seaside towns, long beaches and small coves, lighthouses, affable people and workers. It is fishing and agriculture. It is tradition and modernity. It is gastronomy and celebration.
